Here are a couple of paintings I'm working on at the moment. A picture of my lola (grandma) in the philippines holding a painting I made for her 99th birthday (yup). She's such an inspiration to me. Still truckin and doing all the things she loves to do (teaching filipino folk dance, playing piano, being awesome). And then last and most certainly least a plate of BBQ. why? because nice weathers coming around soon and I want to grill some food better than that crap I took a picture of.

Oh yeah. Almost forgot. My new metal band Gang Signs just played our 3rd show at Lone Wolf (thank you Frank) and recorded our 8 current songs. We're getting a lot of cool feedback so hopefully, if we can afford it, there will be a 7inch to sell to you bastards. Thanks for checking in.

I made a little piece for the Dime Bag 3 show curated by Jordin Isip and Rodger Stevens which should be up at Giant Robot on Saturday, July 18. My idea revolves around things that I've combed out of the beach (without the goofy metal detector). It felt only right to try and put together my own little "mermaid". First off, thanks to all who came to the Pratt Show! It was a swell occasion. Graduation ceremony was so-so (except Judy Collins, you are applauded).

I just lost my moleskine while shopping for clearance DVDs at Virgin Megastore. Just after doing some new awesome drawings from my day at Coney Island and a few other mental burps... I wish it were vaporized rather than lost somewhere.

On another note, I've been resurrecting my passion for making music. My friend Matt Martin and I have brewed up to some mellow ghost vacation jams and I'm pretty excited about it.

...I wish I had drawings to post but they're somewhere out there. keep an eye out.

I often get asked to make printed signs to let Pratt Students know what's the deal here at the print shop/ department. I tend to overdo these simple tasks and add a touch of unnecessary cynicism at the same time. It's a great way to get productive when usually my day would be filled with 8 hours of YouTube.

Over the span of painting, It became clearer to me what was actually channelling through. Now, nearing the end of my college career at Pratt, different thoughts of all shapes and sizes have been shooting back and forth in my nugget. The biggest and most uncomfortable one, is worry. Left to face the chopping block solo-mission, no more crutches or back-up plan, no looking back. No health, No dental. Work hard, stay consistent, avoid the fan-death. Maybe a little looking back.

I'm learning a lot of things while working on this piece everyday. Some about my materials and mostly about myself and the way I work. I have tendencies to run into mind-blocks, worrying about how the next application will effect the piece as a whole. It's not a bad thing to plan out but I've been too stuck on trying to make a "masterpiece". So... I'm realizing that there's no point in consuming brainergy (brain + energy) with that at this time of my life. From now on less, "wah wah. I don't wanna, this is gonna suck." and more, "this is gonna suck, but I'm gonna try to make this work. but It still probably sucks. move on."

The piece is near completed. I am just waiting to photograph it with a better quality camera. It is also locked in the Pratt Studio and am not sure when I can get to it. Pretty lame. It will be up soon.

In the meantime I am in the process of sketching for new paintings, trying to get the website done before mid-January, and putting all my submissions together for AI and the Society of Illustrators.

time of the season

I haven't posted in a bit. I know this. It's nearing the end of the semester and I'm knee deep in busy busy busy. Among other things, there has been a death in the family and my weekend has been a mixture of feelings. Wakes and funerals are always awkward times for me. Rest in peace Tito Tony and my condolences for his family. On a lighter note, I also found out that my cousin in the Philippines just got engaged. So Congratulations Christina!

From now until Christmas you won't here much from me because I'll most likely be too cracked out on caffeine and jalepeno potato chips. But do not feel dismay, I will return with plenty of new things to show you. yay!

Poppin' No Collars

Back in the Spring Jordin Isip hooked up our senior class with a T-shirt design assignment/competition. He had given us the rundown about the Brooklyn-based electro-pop band Matt & Kim. Kim was actually a former Pratt student and Jordin's studio assistant.

Cool stuff! I had heard of Matt & Kim by name and seen them on bills around the city but had never heard their music. I did my research and it's some sick stuff to cut-a-rug to at a party. I decided to just have fun with it and illustrate something totally retarded. Matt and Kim are a couple (in love i presume). And what do we think of love? BARF!

So here's my first idea. Matt and Kim barfing into each others mouths, spelling out their names in some trippy lightning bolt cyclone. I also managed to sneak in a hidden picture of my lil' nephew in it. I thought it was pretty rad but everyone else thought the type was a bit hard to read and the concept was sort of, um, inappropriate.

Sooooo, I focused on the 3-D glasses at the bottom and refined the type into something that could better integrate with the image.

Boom!

In the end, mine was chosen for print and I got a buttload of stickers but still no shirt. It's cool though, when I get my hands on one I'll post it up to show it off. In the meanwhile, you can buy one yourself or you can see a virtual version of it here.

P.S.: Im working on some cool new stuff that I will document as soon as I finish them. One is a triptych on a story my friend told me about Second Life. The other is going to be a personal piece I will try to show in progression as I work on it day to day.

Ode to the LHC

Over the summer I was pretty excited about the final construction stages of the LHC. The Large Hadron Collider is 17 miles in circumference and is buried somewhere between 50 and 175m under the Franco-Swiss border. It's been getting a lot of attention from the media, counting down the time of great scientific breakthrough. To put it in better context, Einstein spent the last portion of his life trying to find out what many of these experiments revolve around.

If you aren't to clear on the purpose of the LHC, luckily a CERN employee made this video. Many skeptics believe that the super-collider will produce a black hole capable of devouring our planet/universe and have created controversy over launching of the experiment. Although CERN promises that any formation of a black hole will be miniscule and harmless, the LHC has already claimed one life. In India, a 16 year old girl poisoned herself right before the firing of the first test. She became terrified like many others from the fear generated by the media exposure. The article here.

I don't think I've mentioned this yet. I love skateboarding. All this cold weather sneaking in and talks of it snowing tomorrow is bumming me out. The air is too sharp to breathe and my knees are all rickety. So, this winter is looking pretty bleak for any skating. In result, I bask in my online video feed. Bask with me.

Another little ritual I do is read some news bits in the morning. One of favorite sites is Salon.com, where I found this. I'm a bit late on it, but I just read that they've been doing a series of some intriguing articles called Atoms & Eden. I've always found truth in science but had grown up under very strict catholic parents. This conflict between faith and science has become one of my favorite topics (Descarte's Bones piece). Enjoy the read.

On the note of science, I stole these photos from my girlfriend's phone of our trip to the NY Hall of Science up in Queens. It's a haul if you don't live in that hood but I highly recommend making a visit. It's super fun and there are plenty of things you can do there. The little installation on light science is sick.

While discovering the secrets of "Being John Malkovich"'s movie magic, I realized I've been wearing the same shirt, for way too long.

Here's my proposal for a new American Psycho book cover. Written by Brett Easton Ellis. I'm sure everyone knows the plot by now but if you haven't read it, you should do so.

The concept is not too far off from the original cover, but with a few subtleties I think mine enhances the creep level. I think this piece is a success in achieving the psychological aspect of Patrick Bateman.

Speaking of numbers, if you're wondering how that "2666" illustration came out, here it is. I'm a bit iffy about how it is as a finish but I did what I could in the amount of time I had. If the NY Observer doesn't choose mine, I'll fix it up for the ol' portfolio. To me, right now its a little "fantasy" style. It was something I couldn't foresee from my sketch. Oh well. You only learn from these things. Roberto Bolano's book basically revolves around the city of Ciudad Juarez. Read up on this place's history and you'll find out about the 450+ women raped/killed in this city.

"A Mercy" by Toni Morrison

I played off the idea that her intention for the book was to remove race from slavery. In the new world, both European and African and even Native American settlers/natives were slaves. Everyone was working their asses off for someone else or in payment to someone.

Another was for a book by Russell Shorto called " Descartes' Bones: A Skeletal History of the Conflict between Faith and Reason". The title is pretty much self explanatory of the topic matter but it didn't hurt to do some research on Rene Descartes. Father of dualism (mind separate from body) and pioneer of modern science. He was also a devout catholic. The church valued his work but feared that it would promote atheism. Look at my sketches and I'm sure you'll catch my drift.

I couldn't sleep much last night mostly because of having really weird, messed up dreams. Everyone wants to talk about what dreams they had last night and how "crazy" they were. I won't get into detail about mine but it woke me up in a pale, sweaty shock.

After Heather and I left her apartment this morning we walked by a guy passed out on a stoop, face ddown and clutching a newspaper. I didn't think anything of it. After living in Greenpoint for a few years you get used to seeing drunkards passed out on streets and stoops. Well later today I heard that that guy was actually dead. I know its odd talking about it on this blog to anyone who reads it but I have to illustrate a book review for Roberto Bolano's "2666", a novel revolving closely to themes of death. So it's in my dreams, it was real and part of my day, and now I gotta think about it all night while I'm painting. Im preparing to wake up in more sweat.

ANYHOO.....

Here's a tiny guy about the inside-look at dorm life at Pratt. I tried to recall my old room from a bunch of years ago. It directly faced the engine building, which to me is iconic of the campus. The neutrality is for the retardedly-cold winter approaching. The red is the source of heat for all pratt campus. I don't live on campus anymore, but I kind of wish I did right now. Their heat works, mine doesn't. I need to call someone about that.

I was supposed to capture a subtle happening around the Clinton Hill, Brooklyn area for this piece. I've always enjoyed the circling of homing pigeons. Although it's not specific to the area, it just reminds me staring out the class window and being hypnotized by the cyclone of flying rats.

Unsolved Mystery

A couple months ago I found this article about a possible end to the search of the Zodiac killer. It was exciting to see all this raw evidence (bloody knives, a hidden mask, undeveloped film with one roll showing what it appears to be gruesome images.) Well I did a lot of research about it and realized that the accusation of Jack Terrance by stepson Dennis Kaufman was seemly becoming more and more false. Supposedly, years before this cbs13 article came out, everyone on forums and other Zodiac sites had acknowledged Kaufman's claim to know the true killer, but as a phony and a mere obsession. This gave me a chance to take this illustration from a different angle.

I wanted to play around with the idea of child-like obsessions, the brainwashing of media and shifting the subject matter to the not-so-obvious.

I wanted to work a different way to make the figures this time. I always try to approach things differently to keep it fun.

So I did some water color body parts, cut them out, scanned them in. I then re-pieced the dude, printed out the full body on some heavyweight paper and used acrylics for the hair eyes and details in the hands. In the end I realized i could have probably just done the whole figure on one piece to save time but whatever. It was interesting.

Final?

I've been tweaking this piece for a while now, coming back to it every now and again and I'm happy with what I have so far I just think I need to redo the bridge. I understand that It's not good to dwell on what you should or should not have done in editorial, but I'm still really psyched on this idea. So check back later and maybe you'll see an actual finish.

Woke up with a soccor ball for a head

So last night was fun. really fun. The party was crowded and filled with a lot of super cool people. I ran into all the guys from the pencil factory where I intern. I saw some old classmates including Cassie Ramone whose band, Vivan Girls, has been blowing up recently. Her and Beth both have rad pieces published in the new AI.

Waking up this afternoon was a huge struggle. I found a lot of weird stuff in my pockets including used napkins of assorted colors, 2 neon matchbooks that looked like dice (4 & 5, no 6) and a sweet new zine by Ted. The open bars did a number on me and big thanks to Heather for getting me home safe.

supposedly I was trying to lower down a line of spit and suck it back up over this big guys shoes. And at one point I actually spat on him. Luckily he was nice enough to not crush my skull.

I just helped set up for the AI-AP party this morning. Beth and I pretty much worked on hanging up the photography side all day. Team work is the shit and looking at all the double-page spreads hanging up, I am in awe of all the amazing work on both the photo and illustration sides.

I also was able to get a sneak peek of AI27 which is a pretty little gem with the cover done by the one and only T ed McGrath. I get to go to the party for free, submit entries for the upcoming competition for free, and get a book for free. Hell yes to Jordin Isip and Mark Heflin for the awesome opportunity.

I'll be posting up a lot of recent comps for the next week or so. Some will explain process and some will not, but Im mostly trying to get them floating around this world wide web.

This is a piece I did about the controversy over Sarah Palin's newborn child Trig. Apparently she knew about Trigs down syndrome before having him (if she did in fact give birth to him). This leads to a hypocrisy concerning her stand on abortion; who can have screenings to in fact have a choice.

I tried to use a number of different line qualities for this piece. The idea is a bit obscure but I thought using the symbol of the pyramid with the cloud in the middle would create a boundary between the few (Palin) and the many (the rest of the women living in the US), much like the masonic pyramid on the back of $1 bills. Using an up-close image of mitosis helped convey the hypocrisy or a divide. I even threw in a tiny bridge to nowhere.
